I‘ll lead a road ride east through Western Springs & LaGrange with a mid-ride stop at the Starbucks in downtown LaGrange. Expect a few sprints, but more of a neighborhood ride than a fast ride. Should be suitable for moderately fast riders who are out of shape (like me) or well more seasoned 14-16 speed riders. The ride should be at the warmest hours of the day and feature headwinds on the first part of the ride. Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46106598

Join Pussanee and me for a Bike and Brew event. Sugar Grove weather calls for Sunny skies with a high near 55F and Winds ENE at 10 to 15 mph. This route takes us into the east and north wind with tail winds on the return trip. Nice easy bike and brew ride on the scenic and paved Virgil Gilman and Fox River Trails. If you are a little slower, no problem we will ride the pace of the slowest rider. E-bikes are most welcome. Great River views along the Fox River on the way. Between Batavia and the North Aurora Dam, the Fox River Trail runs along both sides of the river, with the east bank section running through the very beautiful Red Oak and Glenwood Park Forest Preserves. Also in Aurora, the trail runs along both sides of the river for about a mile, between East Illinois Street and East New York Street. The Virgil Gilman has varying landscape, lots of awesome bridges, nice mixtures of open fields and shade cover and travels from quiet forest and prairie lands to bustling neighborhoods in just 11.3 miles, linking a woodsy community college campus with the Village of Montgomery. All paved trails except about 100 yards of limestone on the Virgil, so any bike is fine. We will be on our tandem road bike. There is about a ½ mile road connection through an Industrial area. Midway stop is at Sturdy Shelter Brewing for a fine craft beer. The first beer for all riders at Sturdy Shelter is on Pussanee and me. If you don‘t drink beer then your soft drink is on us. Please kindly register due to remote start. Please park in the back of the College by the bike trail. We will be back before 5pm, unless we are not. *** We will have a shorter, intro ride this week and hit a lot of little parks on our meander to downtown Glen Ellyn. Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46147198 *** This is a highly social, evening ride that has been a Spring, Summer and Fall tradition since August, 2015. Always rolling at the speed-of-fun. :-) We ride as a team and enthusiastically encourage communication, conversation and laughter, as long as riders prescribe to safe practices such as: communicating about obstacles; and maintaining gaps that are appropriate for the speed, terrain and weather conditions. Your bike must have headlights and tail lights. Avoid using retina-burning, overly-bright and strobing lights since we ride trails as a tight pack and are usually separated from car and truck traffic. We try to curtiously douse headlights when passing pedestrians and fellow riders as we ride into growing darkness. This ride is often best suited for mountain or fat-tire bikes when riding our crushed limestone routes, but also, quite often the weather and trail conditions make this event viable for most any type of bike. No rider will ever be left behind. We have several bona fide EBC Ride Leaders attending this ride for extra safety. Having said that, please don‘t show up if your bike is not ready or you are not in athletic condition for this distance and pace. Note that 10-12 mph on a trail may take the same effort as 13-16 mph on a road; ...and riding a heavy, fat bike or mountain bike requires yet additional effort. Our routes typically vary from one week to the next. Look for route information on our e-mail list server each week before the ride. Let‘s rock!

This is a highly social, evening ride that has been a Spring, Summer and Fall tradition since August, 2015. Let‘s rock!

The Driftless 100 is a hilly and challenging gravel race through Clayton County, Iowa that features beautiful landscape in one of Iowa‘s best kept secrets. Distance options include: 100, 60, 32, 30 miles and 8 miles with the following categories: single speed, fat bike and e-bike. ABOUT THE EVENT: The race is designed to showcase the Driftless region of the state and push even the most savvy gravel rider to their limit physically and mentally. Over 90% of the race is on limestone gravel with about 5% on pavement and 5% on level b/c roads. It is not designed to be a mud fest but this is Iowa in April so it could be sloppy. If you want a carrot, a Driftless branding Iron is awarded to any rider who finishes the 100 mile course in under 8 hours. If you finish in under 7 hours, you get to brand the wall of pain and receive the 7 hour brand. You do have to follow the official course and receive aid only at the aid stations to earn this award. Aid will be provided every 20-25 miles of the race. Navigation is required, there will only be signage for the family route. All profits of the race will go towards the local EMT units in Elkader, Volga and Garber. All proceeds go towards the improvement of equipment and supplies of local Emergency crews. This is a rain or shine event. If there is an imminent severe weather threat we will delay the start of the race for safety but otherwise we will race in the rain. Courses will be altered if there is moisture on course to avoid mud roads. Details + registration here: https://www.driftlessgravel.com Registration capped at 500, 100 limit for 100 mile category. Carpool and accommodation share options available, if interested. Please contact me to discuss.

Celebrate Earth Day by joining us for the GWT Clean Up, a trail EBC frequently uses. This year our section is 1/2 mile long, between North West Road and Main St. Lombard With many volunteers, this portion of the trail will not take long. Bring your gardening gloves. Latex gloves and garbage bags will be supplied. Departure will be from Lombard Commons (bring a bike good for the trail). We will ride along the trail to our starting point, Main St. and split up to take a portion of the trail to clean. Plan on joining us for a break at Gnarly Knots for a pretzel and beverage break. Please RSVP so I know how many supplies to bring.

The Cheesehead Roubaix is coming back for its 13th year this April! Originally advertised to me as "One of the most miserable races" there is, the weather doesn‘t seem to disappoint on that promise. This is a 100km, or ~63 mile bike race, that has roughly 10 miles of chunky gravel throughout the route. While road and fat tire bikes can handle these roads, a gravel setup is optimal. Make sure to bring appropriate clothing, as poor weather (usually) does not cancel this race, and if it ends up anything like last year, you can expect to be pedaling through 40 degree sleet/rain. This race is free to enter, but they do take donations or merchandise purchases to help support the ride. There is one provided rest stop ~40 miles in, but the rest of the ride is self supported. I will be at the starting location about 30 minutes early to check in EBC members. Most riders, including myself, will be riding at a 15-16mph average, but last year there were riders averaging between 12-19mph average. While poor weather does not (usually) cancel this ride, if the travel conditions are poor enough, I will cancel this as an EBC event. The website is currently down, as it is being updated for the 2024 version, but once it is back up you can access the route and more details here: https://sites.google.com/site/cheeseheadroubaix/ While check in is not required, it would be great to know if you plan on making your way up. Please email me at ctmay@protonmail.com if you‘re interested! Details about this ride are subject to change as more information comes out in the following month.
